The intention with this website is to locate at least 1,001 benchmark sites, or die in the attempt (no flowers please, house private). Photos of any benchmark sites found will be posted at intervals over the coming days, weeks, months, years, decades, centuries ... Anyone who wishes to contribute can send photos and descriptions of any benchmarks they find and would like to have included here, to mfbourke@gmail.com See post Number 1 for a fuller description.

NUMBER 1,017

BENCHMARKS continued

This one and the following three, should have been recorded ages ago, but for some unfathomable reason they weren't. This first one is on Ailesbury Road in Dublin City.

NUMBER 1,013

BENCHMARKS continued

Benchmarker chanced upon this one, on the wall of the Phoenix Park, while frustratingly pacing the road when waiting for a bus near the Islandbridge Gate on Conyngham Road in Dublin City. The 25” map does not record it; however just across the road there is one shown on a terrace that is now long gone.

NUMBERS 69, 70 & 71

BENCHMARKS continued
Benchmarker is unsure whether these three can be classified as true benchmarks. However they do appear to have some connection with the Ordnance Survey. At still over nine hundred short of the target, needs must. And so they go in. They are located on the east side of Temple Street West, Dublin.

Below : Two of the 'marks.

Above: Temple Street West with one of the 'marks at extreme right and the other on the near corner of the building.

Below: The 'mark on the corner of Temple Street West and Arbour Hill. It is very much the worse for wear and somewhat difficult to decipher.

NUMBER 9

BENCHMARKS continued

This one is located on Arran Quay, Dublin, on the west wall of Father Mathew Bridge. It looks a little bit the worse for wear, perhaps as a result of the shelling of the nearby Four Courts building during the Civil War of 1922.

Above: The 'mark is located between the pedestrian light signpost and the woman in the red coat.

NUMBER 6

BENCHMARKS continued

This one seems to call out "Remember me!" from underneath the pavement where it is buried at the corner of Benburb Street and Liffey Street West in Dublin City. Just the tops of the letters indicate that this was once a benchmark site. Over the years the level of the street has risen to cover it. An example of how many sites are gradually being lost to posterity.

Above: Benburb Street looking west, with Liffey Street West to the left. The mark is on the bottom facing block of the corner wall.

NUMBERS 2 & 3

BENCHMARKS continued

Below: These two are each located on the bases of the pillars of a gateway at the junction of Temple Street West and Wolfe Tone Quay, Dublin. Benchmarker suspects that training for mapping/surveying work was carried out by personnel attached to the nearby Royal Barracks (later Collins Barracks, now part of the National Museum). Therefore these particular benchmarks, and others close by, may have been used for training exercises. It's only a theory.

Above: Wolfe Tone Quay, looking east towards the city centre. The 'marks are at the bases of the pillars of the entrance on the left.
