On a fine day at the end of Summer this one was spotted on the north side of Dublin Street in Kildare Town on a building that is now the home of the Racing Legends Museum but was previously the courthouse.

A WD (war department) mark on Lyster Street in Athlone, spotted, photographed, and forwarded by Linda de Buitlear. This one, No 1, was the first one of nine which were carved in that vicinity. Another place that still has a few of these WD marks is Benburb Street in Dublin. Both locations are close to former British military barracks. I suspect they were used to train the young sapper laddie boys in the noble profession of map making.

There are some mighty bridges over the broad River Barrow and many of them wear a benchmark on their walls. One such is this one in Graigueenamanagh in County Kilkenny.
