The intention with this website is to locate at least 1,001 benchmark sites, or die in the attempt (no flowers please, house private). Photos of any benchmark sites found will be posted at intervals over the coming days, weeks, months, years, decades, centuries ... Anyone who wishes to contribute can send photos and descriptions of any benchmarks they find and would like to have included here, to mfbourke@gmail.com See post Number 1 for a fuller description.

NUMBER 794

BENCHMARKS continued

This one in the Phoenix Park in Dublin is to the east side of the Kyber Road near the junction with the Military Road. There is an indication that it has been moved there from another location as it appears to have been plastered over at some stage, although only the central leg now indicates this. Alternatively, it may in fact be the 'mark shown close to this location on the 6” maps.

NUMBER 510

BENCHMARKS continued

M.C. scythed a path through the sward surrounding the south-west corner of the complex that was formerly the Royal Hibernian Military School; later the T.B. hospital known as Saint Mary's; and now the Cara Cheshire Home, in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, to record this one.

Below: The 'mark on the perimeter wall of the Cara Cheshire Home, Phoenix Park.

Above: Is it an O'Connor, a Cezanne, a Van Gogh; or is it perhaps a Halford who is now perhaps working through the medium of colour? No, it's none of these. It's just a lovely, lovely picture by M.C. with the 'mark at bottom left.

NUMBER 200

BENCHMARKS continued

And so we come to a historic juncture - the 200th recorded benchmark. Da, daaa! Spotted by M.C on a joint safari, appropriately for its status as NUMBER 200, it is on a building at the entrance to the Ordnance Survey Headquarters in the Phoenix Park in Dublin. A brickie that, with its exact cuts, appears pristine. A truly lovely 'mark; we are not worthy.

NUMBER 120

BENCHMARKS continued

This one, from the iphone of M.C., is near the Phoenix Monument on Chesterfield Avenue in Dublin. It really is rather charming.

NUMBERS 44, 45, 46 & 47.

BENCHMARKS continued
A search of the gateways of the Phoenix Park turned up a grand total of only four gateways with benchmarks, somewhat small as it is way less than 50%. Even the gateway to that most prestigious of addresses in Dublin 8, (with the exception of Benchmarker's abode, of course) Aras an Uachtarain, drew a blank. The same for the residence of the American Ambassador and the former residence of the Papal Nuncio. On this visit Benchmarker was unable to explore the buildings of the Ordnance Survey Headquarters. It would be ironic if there were no benchmarks there, but not really surprising.

Below: At the pedestrian turnstile opposite Grangegorman Cemetery. The 'mark is on the gate pillar at right. The entrance to the cemetery can be seen through the bars of the gate.

Below: Cabra Gate. The 'mark is on the pillar nearest.

Below: Ashtown Gate. The'mark is on the pillar at right of traffic gate.

Below: Knockmaroon Gate, with the 'mark on the pillar at right.
