NUMBER 952

BENCHMARKS continued

This one in Edinburgh, Scotland, from Michael Byrne is on Princes Street near the Ramsay statue.

Below: A 'mark on Princes Street, Edinburgh.

Above: On Princes Street and looking north east. The 'mark is out of view at the base of the heavy black railing on the right of photo; and Michael Byrne outlines the travails involved in capturing this one “if ever a 'mark deserved the title "Benchmark", then this is it. The long stretch of Princes Street is very well served with a whole host of bus stops. Behind the bus stops, dozens of long wooden benches are provided as respite for the legs of all and sundry after a long days shopping. Residing UNDERNEATH one of these benches is BM205.6, completely hidden from view. To find it, you'll need the flexibility of a contortionist and a hard neck to ignore the blatant curiosity of pedestrians, bus and tram passengers and especially people already sitting on the benches. Having had to virtually lie down on the path to take the photo, I left the scene far too embarrassed to ask the resting old folk to shift for my location shot. That one was picked up by doubling back later, when all was quieter.”
