The intention with this website is to locate at least 1,001 benchmark sites, or die in the attempt (no flowers please, house private). Photos of any benchmark sites found will be posted at intervals over the coming days, weeks, months, years, decades, centuries ... Anyone who wishes to contribute can send photos and descriptions of any benchmarks they find and would like to have included here, to mfbourke@gmail.com See post Number 1 for a fuller description.

NUMBER 701

BENCHMARKS continued
Benchmarker has long held a dream to live in a house that nestles a 'mark on its structure. Opportunities for this arise perhaps once in a lifetime; if indeed ever. So, it was with an enormous sense of disappointment to discover that such a chance had arisen and M.C. had failed to inform of said eventuality. Words will be exchanged; never fear! It's on the gable wall of a house on Turvey Avenue near the centre of Donabate in County Dublin.
Below: The 'mark on Turvey Avenue, Donabate.
Above: Looking east on Turvey Avenue with the 'mark at bottom left of the gable wall.

NUMBER 700

BENCHMARKS continued
As the light declined, this upside-down one was recorded on the camera-phone of M.C. It's on Westmoreland Bridge in Phibsborough in Dublin. It appears not to be in its original place on the bridge wall and was probably moved when it was reused with the other wall stones when the that wall was rebuilt at some time.
Below: The 'mark on Westmoreland Bridge.

Above: Looking south on Phibsborough Road with the 'mark at left.

NUMBER 695

BENCHMARKS continued

This one was submitted by Sharon, a historian in Limerick City. A first from there, I believe. It's at the entrance to Barringtons' Hospital on George's Quay. Sharon's blog on that city is here: - limerickslife.com
(Where to put the apostrophe is a conundrum with which Benchmarker constantly wrestles. The hospital website omits it completely; the name-plate on the building has it after the 's' of Barringtons; while modern maps etc put it before the 's'. Life is never simple. Sigh!)
