NUMBER 392

BENCHMARKS continued

The bridge in Dublin City that is commonly referred to as Mount Street Bridge is listed in the 25” maps as Mc Kenny Bridge, and in the earlier 6” maps as Mc Kenna Bridge. Whichever version you prefer is up to you.
For a diversion on all that and a look at how our American cousins go about benchmark hunting, see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbrNcizQ7sM&feature=related

BENCHMARKS continued

On his extensive campaign last year in the Dublin 4 area, M.C. overlooked this particular one on Northumberland Road. It was left to Benchmarker to mount a mopping-up mission.

BENCHMARKS continued

The historic maps indicate that there once was a benchmark on Ringsend Bridge, Dublin. No definite trace now exists. However there is a 'mark - of a sort - to one side of the Bridge, and this is it.

BENCHMARKS continued

The final one from the Easter Sunday benchmark hunt at the East Pier was found on the return journey. It is located near the end of the sloped walkway that leads down to the lower level of the pier wall.

BENCHMARKS continued

The End of the Pier Show. The Easter Sunday benchmark hunt continued and turned up this one at the end of the East Pier on the wall of the building which now contains Teddy's Ice Cream Parlour. Wonder did Ryan get some cones for the children there? But, as they walked out and back in again in a very short time, probably not.

BENCHMARKS continued

For proper grown-ups it's not about an egg hunt; it's the benchmark hunt that excites. You literally never can tell what will happen. This scene occurred serendipitously while on a hunt on the East Pier of Dun Laoghaire on Easter Sunday. A picture of a benchmark flanked by two broadcasting legends.
Having found a 'mark near the Bandstand, M.C. paused to consult his copy of the 25” map in preparation for finding the next one further along the pier; and while Benchmarker raised the camera to record it, Ryan Tubridy - presenter of the Late Late Show, self-described 'young fogey', 2FM DJ, US President JFK biographer, and much, much more - along with his family, strolling on the walkway above, moved into shot. Benchmarker detected a quick appraising glance just before pressing the shutter. But don't worry Ryan, the 'mark was the centre of attraction in this scene.
