NUMBER 800
BENCHMARKS continued
A few years ago, while on a hunt, M.C. and Benchmarker
scoured practically the full length of the Old Bray Road in an
attempt to locate this one. It should have been easy; according to
the map it was on the still surviving wall along the south side of
the road at Cornelscourt, practically opposite the eponymous Shopping
Centre. But, it was all in vain. The conclusion was therefore that it
no longer existed. And then years later Michael Byrne came along and
spotted it and kindly emailed his find. M.C. and Benchmarker can only
marvel and lift their hats to a superb benchmark hunter.

NUMBER 796
BENCHMARKS continued
Another one from the camera of
Michael Byrne and it too was spotted while on a ramble on the Cliff
Walk from Bray. It's located about 20 minutes into the walk so
perhaps that would make it about a mile south of the start of the
walk; or for our continental visitors, about 1.5 kilometres.
Below: A 'mark about 20 minutes
walk along the Cliff Walk from where it commences at Bray in County Wicklow.

BENCHMARKS continued
With its russet and amber tones
and the sparkling azure sea below, it could be a view of Amalfi; or
even Fuenteventura or maybe Zakinthos; or perhaps Torrevieja. (No -
on second thoughts - perhaps not Torreieja.) Where it actually is, is
Bray. Yes, Bray. And it was there on the Cliff Walk that heads out of
the town and goes south to Greystones, that Michael Byrne spotted
this fine one while on a ramble.

Walk overlooking Bray in County Wicklow.

NUMBER 794
BENCHMARKS continued
This one in the Phoenix Park in Dublin is to the east
side of the Kyber Road near the junction with the Military Road.
There is an indication that it has been moved there from another
location as it appears to have been plastered over at some stage,
although only the central leg now indicates this. Alternatively, it
may in fact be the 'mark shown close to this location on the 6”
maps.
Below: The 'mark near the south end of the Kyber Road in
the Phoenix Park.
Above: Looking west over the Kyber Road towards the Magazine Fort and with
the 'mark on the granite slab in the ground on the right.
