NUMBER 386

BENCHMARKS continued

For proper grown-ups it's not about an egg hunt; it's the benchmark hunt that excites. You literally never can tell what will happen. This scene occurred serendipitously while on a hunt on the East Pier of Dun Laoghaire on Easter Sunday. A picture of a benchmark flanked by two broadcasting legends.
Having found a 'mark near the Bandstand, M.C. paused to consult his copy of the 25” map in preparation for finding the next one further along the pier; and while Benchmarker raised the camera to record it, Ryan Tubridy - presenter of the Late Late Show, self-described 'young fogey', 2FM DJ, US President JFK biographer, and much, much more - along with his family, strolling on the walkway above, moved into shot. Benchmarker detected a quick appraising glance just before pressing the shutter. But don't worry Ryan, the 'mark was the centre of attraction in this scene.

Below: A 'mark on the East Pier, Dun Laoghaire.
Above: The East Pier, looking towards the mouth of the harbour, with the 'mark at right about halfway up the wall. The Bandstand can be glimpsed just behind M.C.'s head.
