M.C. is of a mind that this one has been moved a little bit from its original position. And looking at the brickwork of the wall on which it is positioned, it appears it is the casualty of repairs and he is correct. It is located on the east side of the bridge in Celbridge, County Kildare.

NUMBER 542

BENCHMARKS continued

Finding an up-side-down benchmark is as rare as getting a royal flush in poker. (Well maybe not, if you are J.W.) M.C. though was extremely fortunate to find this one on Kellystown Gate, Carton Demesne, County Kildare. M.C. is pretty sure he knows why the 'mark came to be that way. He had checked the gate area on a previous occasion and found it to be undergoing repair. It appears therefore that when the gate pillar was rebuilt, the stone containing the 'mark was erected wrong way up. It's as well they weren't trying to build one of them pyramid yokes.

Below: The 'mark at Kellystown Gate, Carton Demesne.

Above: A view of the gate with the 'mark at the bottom of the gate pillar in the foreground. Nice work! Now all it needs is a new capping stone!
