NUMBER 877

BENCHMARKS continued

Not on the map, but fairly easy to spot, somehow M.C. and Benchmarker missed this one on a trawl of Drogheda, County Louth, a couple of years or so ago. It's on Duke Street at its junction with Fair Street.

NUMBER 681

BENCHMARKS continued

Struggling desperately to be free from a cocoon of cement rendering is this one on the corner of a building about half way along the south side of the North Strand in Drogheda (M.C. has helpfully outlined its freed limbs with white chalk). Sadly man's cruelty to dumb 'marks knows no bounds.

NUMBER 679

BENCHMARKS continued

It had to happen! On many of those long, lonely hunts which resulted in the sad discovery that the original site had been rebuilt while the stone containing the 'mark had apparently been discarded, Benchmarker and M.C. often conjectured if perhaps one day they might chance upon a 'mark-stone that had been reused in a rather unusual location on the rebuilt structure. And so it came to pass in lovely Dogheda, which just keeps giving and giving. The 'mark is about 12ft above the ground on the corner of the rebuilt building on Merchants' Quay at its corner with Blind Gate.

NUMBER 676

BENCHMARKS continued

A couple of years ago Eugene Doyle submitted four 'marks he had bagged in the heart of Drogheda. One of them was located on the Tholsel on West Street and was posted here as NUMBER 351. What has since emerged, following an extensive hunt in the town by M.C. and Benchmarker, is that that particular 'mark is not recorded on any of the maps. In itself this is not of particularly great significance. However just a few paces away on that same building is another 'mark, (which is in fact recorded on the maps). What is particularly significant therefore is that the Tholsel is almost certainly the only structure in the whole wide world to display two 'marks; and also takes the record for the shortest distance between any two 'marks. Take a bow, Drogheda!
