NUMBER 950

BENCHMARKS continued

This one in Edinburgh, Scotland, from Michael Byrne is on the last step in a set leading from The Mound down into Princes Street Gardens.

Below: A 'mark on the last step in a set leading from The Mound down into Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh.

Above: The steps leading from The Mound down into Princes Street Gardens. The mark is out of sight at the bottom right hand corner and Michael Byrne explains why. “This is an incredibly busy set of steps in central Edinburgh, and more so on a beautiful sunny day (when the location photo was taken), as people head for a stroll in Princes Street Gardens. Biding my time to avail of a rare occasion when I could crouch at the base of the steps without being trampled on, I seized such a moment while being fully aware of the onslaught of Japanese tourists immediately behind me. In my haste, I missed the Benchmark, which is just out of view on the first step as it trails out of view at bottom right. Mea Culpa.” Michael, there is nothing to apologise for. Our Health and Safety Policy specifies that all benchmark hunters must primarily consider their own safety. Thankfully we have not lost one yet and we are extremely glad that you survived to record many more 'marks.
