The intention with this website is to locate at least 1,001 benchmark sites, or die in the attempt (no flowers please, house private). Photos of any benchmark sites found will be posted at intervals over the coming days, weeks, months, years, decades, centuries ... Anyone who wishes to contribute can send photos and descriptions of any benchmarks they find and would like to have included here, to mfbourke@gmail.com See post Number 1 for a fuller description.

NUMBER 817

BENCHMARKS continued

With a view that rivals that of Gorse Hill, this one from Michael Byrne is on a gate pillar on the south side of the Vico Road – near the Sorrento Terrace side – in Killiney, County Dublin. Sadly it is mainly plastered over in concrete.

NUMBER 645

BENCHMARKS continued

This one is on Station Road in Killiney, County Dublin, a short way north of the eponymous railway station, and at the entrance to the steps that lead down to the beach.

Above: Looking south on Station Road with the 'mark at bottom left and the railway station building in the distance. It contains a rather good cafe where M.C. had some tea with bread, butter and jam, while Benchmarker had just an americano, although the cakes were tempting.

BENCHMARKS continued

This one is on the north side of Marino Avenue West - near its junction with Killiney Hill Road in Killiney, County Dublin - and adjacent to the home of a man with a large collection of ancient stone water troughs, and the proud owner of a rare classic sports car, both of which he graciously showed to M.C. and Benchmarker.

On a mopping up operation in the environs of Killiney, County Dublin, M.C. and Benchmarker bagged a few stragglers, among them this one which is located on the eastern section of Strathmore Road, about 100 yards south of the entrance to Bono's gaff.

NUMBER 473

BENCHMARKS continued

A local landmark, this chunky turreted building on Victoria Road in Killiney appears to have started out as a gate lodge and gradually evolved into its present castle persona.

NUMBER 472

BENCHMARKS continued

A short distance further on, on the south side of Victoria Road is this one.

NUMBER 471

BENCHMARKS continued

Proceeding into Victoria Road we come upon this one at the entrance to Victoria Castle.

Below: A 'mark at the castle on Victoria Road.

Above: Victoria Castle with the 'mark, left, on the corner below the cross shaped window opening.

P.S. M.C., who is is chief researcher for another popular website - thegpo.net - corresponded to inform of the history of the castle.
Built by Robert Warren in 1840 it was named in honour of the new queen.
Following a fire in 1928 it was restored by Sir Thomas Power of the whiskey family - of Thomas Street fame - and renamed Ayesha after the goddess who rose from the flames in Rider Haggard's novel She.
At a later stage it was owned by the Alymer family.
Enya bought the Castle in 1997 and out of her love for Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca, re-dubbed it (get it?) Manderley for the fictional house that plays a central role in the 1938 novel.
If memory serves correctly, and it does so less and less these days, Benchmarker seems to recall that J.W. was on first name terms with Daphne du Maurier; and that he scooped the pot after choosing Rebecca as his specialist subject in a version of Mastermind.
Coincidently, Benchmarker bought a copy of She last week in a charity shop in Thomas Street. If good fortune smiles then perhaps a copy of Rebecca will materialize there also. Bon chance.

NUMBER 470

About 100 yards further on up Vico Road from the steps shown in the previous post, the older maps show the boundary line that indicates we are leaving Dalkey and entering Killiney. This one is located in Killiney on the south side of the Vico Road at its junction with Victoria Road.

Below: A 'mark on Vico Road.
